The Pursuit of Success

“I just wanna Be, I Just Wanna Be, I Just Wanna Be Successful” Drake

Is it Yay or Nay?

Some people may not like this post very much but I have had this thought in my mind bank for a while now. Many people I know, most of them Christian has very publicly talked about pursuing success is of “the devil”. Now in my mind, the devil ain’t got nothing to do with success especially since he is out for everyone’s demise Especially if you are saved , outspoken Follower of Jesus Christ! The devil isn’t trying to elevate you, he is out to DESTROY you and everyone attached  you! But I digress lol

Success essentially has gotten a bad wrap because it says if you want to be successful you are chasing after money and not God.
Now I believe (and Yes I am a Christian, Follower of Jesus, in human flesh ) that success is Not Sin and I also believe that God Wants Us to be Successful. The bible even says, “I came that they may have life and have it More Abundantly”,(John 10:10) “For I Know the plans I think towards you says the Lord, plans to Prosper You and Not Harm you, Plans to Give you a Hope and a Future” (Jeremiah 29:10-11). Now if God, the creator Almighty has Said Himself That His THOUGHTS are to make me Proper, then I mean… Success is written All over that! I am Just saying. Too often people get caught up in the societal view of what success is. The “world or worldview” is that success means obtaining massive amounts of money and being filthy rich, greedy and having no need for God, Not True. The definition of success is: the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts of endeavors; the accomplishment of one’s goals. (

Now for me success is measured in what you do for others and your returns in response of that giving. Success is actually different for everyone. Me being successful could be getting up everyday at the same time, getting my daughter ready for school, getting her there on time and me taking care of our needs. To me that makes me successful. To someone else being successful is climbing the ladder at their corporate or not-for-profit job (and there is NOTHING wrong with having a job by the way, #DameDash) and obtaining a position they have been wanting to have for a long time. They put in the hours, made the sacrafices, did the work and now they can reap the benefits of their labor. Another success for someone could be simply saying hello to strangers because they are deemed as shy. There are many levels of success but too often people get so caught up in, “oh if you are trying to get a raise or do better for yourself you’re in sin or you being consumed with money”? I mean let’s talk real for a second, how are we able to survive in this world? Money right? We need it to Live Literally! We Have to pay bills, We Have to eat, We Need a place to live (and Noone is living for free even at your parents house!) So money is necessary, there is No way around that. What tends to happen however is people become too caught up in How other people are becoming successful. We are looking into the lives of others and making judgements based on what we see rather than what we know.

There is Nothing wrong with wanting to be successful, wanting enough money to take care of family, it becomes a problem when that’s ALL you are consumed with. I challenge all that read this blog to look at little successes in your life and count them as big successes. If you are trying to lose weight and didn’t eat that candy bar, You are Successful. If you were afraid to speak in front of people and you have your first speech or talk, Congratulations! You Are Successful! If you never thought you would write a blog, a story, or anything you were afraid to do and you did! You DID IT and You Are Successful! Let’s Stop, hammering people for their success and celebrate with them. If you are Christian and you see a sister or brother Hustling (in a good way now) to get there’s and make a means for their family, cheer them on. It may not be about the money, it could be about them just doing what God told them to do and it’s beginning to pay off monetarily.

That’s another thing real quick I want to add, just because someone is getting money for what they do doesn’t mean they are chasing after money. I don’t believe God called me to be broke and He gave me skills, talents and abilities to be Bless people with, bring Him Glory and I get to keep the rewards and guess what, there is Nothing wrong with that. Stop assuming that’s what people are doing all the time if you see them getting money because you have NO idea what they didn’t have before.

Success, true Success is measured in how you give and what you do for others. God blesses and honors that and sometimes it’s monetary, sometimes it’s favor, sometimes it’s blessings of gifts from others. Don’t compare your success with others or downplay the success of others. Focus on your success, celebrate others and let’s Go Get It, Together!

The Pursuit in The Return

Its the 15th! Last day for taxes to be filed and getting your return. Many were prepared in advance and have already recieved, others are scrambling trying to get it all done today with the anticipation that they will get what they have Hope for in a return. It’s funny because we look at our w-2’s and we see the time and effort we’ve put into our jobs/careers and sometimes it looks as though things aren’t adding up. We see what our salary is but then we look at the time we’ve spent to earn that salary, and we think “is it worth it”, “I am worth more than this!”. Have you ever thought that or am I alone in this one?

This past weekend I was in Greenkill,NY for a youth retreat. I was so excited to spend 4 days with the most amazing 20 teens/young adults  from across NYC. Now I know some of you will see teen and think, “Teenagers, is she crazy,  amazing?” And YES I said amazing. I am apart of an organization called Council For Unity, which teaches teens, middle school aged and high school, youth development in the areas of Family, Unity, Self Esteem and Empowerment. Throughout those 4 days they were challenged, broken, stepped outside of their comfort zone and made tremendous strides to being better people. The camp we were at facilitated team building activities with them and they had to learn to work together. I had the opportunity to speak to them about Self Esteem, and valuing themselves as young men and women. Hearing some of the responses and introspective insight they gained, truly blew me away. One student a male told me that even though this was 4 days, he is dedicated to taking what he learned to continue to be a better man! He is In Pursuit!

Now I will say, 4 days with teens and young adults Does take ALOT out of you. The tiredness I felt is indescribable. However the Joy I felt is as equally Indescribable. Seeing those teens transform in such a short amount of time has done my heart well. I am completley convinced that they will soar to be successful, productive and model individuals in their communities and amongst their peers.

That is the Pursuit of Return. In the thick of it we do not see the results of labor. We fuss, we want to quit, we want to give up, we feel exhaustion, we feel it All, BUT at the end of it all there is a Return, that’s Sweet and Right on Time. It makes you feel that your work was Not in vain and it fuels you to continue! To continue the work, continue the building, continue the fight. I want to encourage you to Continue the Pursuit because There IS a Return Waiting on the other side, you just gotta “file” for it in its Time!

I am Excited for Your Return!

I Invite you to Continue the Pursuit and Don’t let Anything Stop You!
Until Next Time, Be You, Stay True, and Pursue!

The Pursuit of Self

When I started writing the Pursuit of Self, my first soon to be self published book, that was not the original title of the book. The original title would have had most people puzzled and questioning but consequently they would have never picked up my book to read it. Such a terrifying truth. Ironically, the contents of the book I knew would be about telling a story of trials, hurt, pain, mishaps and self discovery. I knew that with every story I shared regarding my life, a piece of me was being given out into the world. In the beginning of telling my story, I took a boot-camp called “The Best Sellers Project” facilitated by Tiphani Montgomery and Azarel. My first session with them they asked me the title of my book, and I told them, Proudly too, “The Road to SXSI”. Immediately Tiphani said to me ” I would never buy a book with that title”. I cringed! What was I going to do now? I had not thought of another title and I was going with what I had. At this point I had no choice but to change it because if Tiphani Montgomery, 7 time Essence best seller tells you She wouldn’t buy your book because of the title, You change that title!

At that point I was frantic, frustrated and just plain crushed. How was I going to change the title? So I researched, thought, “dug in”, and researched some more. I asked my niece about some titles that I thought fit the message I was trying to convey and she gave me great feedback. Then it came to me, throughout my life I was constantly looking for something. Looking to be loved, looking to matter, looking for validation, looking to have a purpose in life. Always searching as if I was running after something. Every story I share has been about the chaos I endured whether created by me or by circumstance channeled the Pursuit of finding who I was in the midst of my chaos. The Pursuit of Self, ironically was discovered by me, looking for a sense of self deep down within myself. Trying to understand who I am now and what I wanted to share with the rest of the world or at least the one person I wanted to speak to to help them be in a better place in their life.

The Pursuit was not easy to live through and it was not easy to write. In fact, pursing the person I thought I was became a never ending journey that had many levels of discovery that challenged and changed me to who I am already meant to be in life. From being completely stressed out at my previous job, to adjusting to being a new single mother of a 3 year old who commands Much of my attention, to struggling with whether I should follow society’s norm of finishing school to be successful or pursue what I truly have a passion for which is writing and inspiring people. This writing journey alone has been a huge pursuit.

So what does this mean for you? What am I saying to you? If you find yourself in your own world-wind of chaos; you’re in the midst of losing your home, your child(ren) are driving you crazy, feeling like your life is one circle of chaos and crisis after another, I want to encourage you that You Can Make It Through, you must Pursue, Pursue, Pursue! What you tend to find in those very situations is a lesson that is meant to teach and grow you and in the process you discover a different version of yourself, you did not even know existed!
